My husband and I did just the opposite: we tried to pick names that COULDN’T be turned into a nickname. (weird, I know.)

As it turns out, you can make a nickname out of just about anything. Our older son’s name is Dylan and people have called him “D”, “Dyl”, “Dill”, and even “Pickle Boy”. (My sister calls him “Sparky”, which is obviously unrelated.)

Our younger son is “Jason”. We’ve called him “Jay”, “JCPenney”, and “Jacey”. My sister calls him “Skippy”.

I think some nicknames just come on their own, without trying!

Deb is my baby sis. & she is correct, Tre is quick to tell strangers he has 5 names Robert Lee Hendrix THE Third! He like Ty has his days @ children’s church where he wants to Robert and other days he insists on being Tre! But I have like a hundred nicknames for him. I thank God he does have an identity problem! I call him New, Newnie, Newnie New (or whatever variation strikes my fancy), Lil, Punkin, my Favorite Little Pumpkin. He has never seemed confused (surprisingly).

I know that doesn’t help. I think it’s just a phase, they’ll adjust as time goes on!

& not to burst your bubble but we gave him the name Tre way before he was born. If it makes you feel better deb, I still have the story you wrote in school saying your sister was “bregnant,” from before Paige was born ;~))

@Ce, um, for your information that nickname was given to me be a co-worker at Wegman's in Rochester. Maybe you should do some fact checking before making up bogus new reports!!!

U might not remember, but I called you Keefee when referring to u when u were growing up so u would know it was u and not your father. I started calling your that around two or three and u did know I was talking to u. I would start off saying Keith, then u and your dad would answer, then I woould say no Keefee and u knew I meant u. And don’t forget u gave yourself your own nickname….Jetson…later as a teenager, but thats another story for another time! lol

I don’t have a clue what is the best way to introduce nicknames for the kids, so someone please give us some advice. When I grew up I had about 3 or 4 nicknames, everybody called me something different, lol.

You should have been “Deuce”!!! Or Junior. Or June Bug. Or Rob. Lol. You seem like the type where you would have just made one up and told people to start calling you it.

I should ask my sister about my nephew because we call him Tre also. He’s about 5 years old now and he knows that if someone says “Tre” they are talking about him, but when someone asks him his name he says, “I am Robert Lee Hendrix the 3rd”. He’s been using that line since he was about 3. I would also like to add that I suggested that we call him Tre because he was the third.
