Pop or Soda?

Pop or Soda?

Every so often, I participate in random focus groups to discuss various products & services.  The pay is pretty good, usually $50-75 for 2hrs, and more importantly I actually enjoy doing them.  It’s pretty entertaining, sitting with a group of people that you don’t know and sharing thoughts and experiences.  The most recent study that I requested to participate in was specifically for drinkers of carbonated “soda” beverages. The thought of joining this focus group brought back many memories from my childhood, college years, and most recently my parenting years. I’ve been involved in the battle between pop & soda for quite some time, and even though I’m now living in the south, I’ll never stop campaigning for POP! This creates a bit of a dilemma when it comes to my kids, but we’ll get to that.

I can remember my first encounter with a “soda lover”; I was 14 years old and remember it like it was yesterday.  My Mom and I had taken a trip to Baltimore, MD to visit one of her friends that had recently moved there.  We’re from upstate NY and this was really one of my first times leaving the area for a big trip.  Anyways, the first day that we arrive, my Mom’s friend suggests that we go to the “Cheesecake Factory” (it later became my favorite restaurant).  This was our first time going to this restaurant so we were both excited, once we’re seated the waitress asks for our drink orders and I reply ever so innocently with “what kind of pop do you have?” This lady literally looks at me like I’m from another planet and says “I don’t think we have any kind of pop, can I get you something else.”  So now we’re sitting there dumbfounded, like what type of establishment doesn’t serve pop? I ask again, if she’s sure they don’t have any pop and once again the waitress just looks clueless.  My Mom’s friend then interjects (after having a good laugh), “he means soda, what kind of soda do you have?” The waitress then begins to spew a list of various beverages that seemed like it would last forever.  After she took our orders and left, my Mom’s friend explained that “down here” everyone calls it soda and if you go around asking for pop you’ll just get strange looks.  This was my first battle in the war against soda, and I lost.

Fast forward a few years to college at RIT, a “pop lover’s” haven.  Back on my home turf of upstate NY, the battle raged on, fierce drunken debates between myself and fellow upstate New Yorkers against our NYC friends.  I won’t bore you with details of these debates, but know that they would last upwards of an hour and sometimes spark mini debates: sneakers vs. tennis shoes, air ones vs. uptowns, etc.  At the end of the day, the pop supporters were always victorious because no matter what argument was brought against us, we could always travel to Wegmans and buy a can of Wpop for back up.

Back to present day and I’ve found myself in a conundrum, I’ve done the unthinkable and actually married a “soda lover”, and we now have pop/soda lover hybrid kids.  Do I wave the white flag and give up the fight that I’ve fought for so long, or do I continue on as a champion of POP?  I started the latter with Ty and the results, while funny, weren’t exactly what I had intended.  Anytime that Fefe would ask me if I’d like some soda, I’d tell her that I don’t drink soda, and to get me some pop (playing around of course).  Well Ty caught on and decided to fight the good fight against soda with me.  Only problem is, he actually thought that pop and soda were two different things.  If Fefe came to him holding a bottle of Pepsi and asked if he wanted some soda, he would respond with “no, give me some pop” (good boy, taught him well!).  So Fefe would pour the Pepsi and tell him “here’s your pop”, Ty would respond by saying that’s not pop, its soda and I’m not drinking it. LMAO, you can’t help but see the humor in that.  We eventually got him to understand that the difference was merely in the name and not the physical product, but eventually took a really long time.

So my question to you parents out there living with hybrid children, do you just go with the flow of the region that you’re living in? Or do you try to instill some of your history from the area that you grew up?  I’m still unsure if my kids go to school saying pop, while all the others are saying soda, will they be thought of as cool for bringing such an awesome word to the forefront, or will they be ostracized and looked at as aliens like I was so many years ago in that “Cheesecake Factory”

Toy Reviews are back, so be sure to head on over to Ty’s Tuesday Toy Review and see what he’s playing with today.

I think that u just need to go with what everybody else is saying. In the south people call it Soda, so if u live in the south just call it Soda. Plus I don’t want nobody else kids going through what I went through with Ty, lol. It was such a long battle that I fought to show Ty that Soda & Pop was the same thing.

Ahhh yes, the eternal debate. After reading your post, this NY Times article comes to mind. http://ideas.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/09/11/the-soda-vs-pop-map/

Oh… And it’s “Soda” BTW. Your wife is right.

@Ray N, Thanks for the link to the map, that’s awesome. I thought it would look a little different though based on my travels. Cool link.

You’re about to start a war and POP shall prevail. I remember those heated debates at RIT and yes WPop was always the nail in the coffin for soda lovers. I’m in Chicago and it is definitely a hybrid town, some people say pop and some people say soda. I still say pop.

@Tdubb, POP shall prevail, all hail pop!!!

Ur kids can just call it soda pop…..cause thats what the orginal name is soda pop, everyone just divided it n took the part they liked. I personally call it soda, but since ur kids are “hybrids” that seems to work. So everybody wins.

@maliah,
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS, somebody with sense. The original name is Soda pop, due to the reasons Deborah mentioned below: It was a beverage made with baking soda and would make a popping sound whenever the bottle was opened. NOBODY IS RIGHT. The only people that are wrong are the ones that call everything coke..lol.

And the Cheesecake Factory is that old?

@maliah, very rational idea. I wonder how long it’d take before they got bored with the long name and picked a side though, lol. Only time will tell.

Well it has always been Pop for me. Growning up and still living in the North, we all say Pop. I definitely remember that incident at the Cheesecake factory. It seeems hilarious now, but at the time, I was just as confused as you were. I was thinking, I’ve never been to a restaraunt that doesn’t sell pop for drinks. lol. When someone says Soda here, we do look at them funny, then say, oh, they must be from the south. lol. I think the best thing for the kids is to call it soda pop like Maliah said. That way, everyone is correct.

This is interesting considering my husband “Ray N” is also a “SODA” lover. I on the other hand love “POP.” Even though we live upstate he refuses to switch sides. We don’t have any children yet, but when we do I’m pretty sure they’ll call it “SODA.” Upon many conversations with my him and claims of it’s proper usage, I’m giving in…since you live in the South, I would do the same. : ( : ( My vote is “SODA or SODA POP” for the kids!

I’m a pop person being from Detroit and all. It’s hard to stay a pop person living in the South though. Sometime you have to say soda just to make your life easier. My boyfriend is from Mississippi and he says “sacks” instead of “bags” for grocery bags. I had to get used to that.

I think saying pop is logical. What do the bubbles do when they reach the top? Pop! Soda is an ingredient that is combined with other things to make pop. That’s my explanation.

@Deborah, I like you’re thinking! I always knew it was called Soda Pop, but never actually took the time out to think about why.

Keith I’ve been in Bama 8yrs and I still call it pop. I’ve adapted to the southern lifestyle hot sauce and grease on everything. But POP and sneakers cant be compromised. Sorry Fefe but the soda battle must be lost.

Fefe Reply:

@Tanisha, Tanisha U have disappointed me, lol. I have converted over from Texas Pete to Franks Hot sauce, Dukes Mayo to Miracle Whip and I refuse to to switch from calling it Soda to POP, lol. I think it is Keith’s turn to switch now.

Keith Reply:

@Fefe, Nope, Nish is right now target! Somethings change, but Pop will remain the same.

[Reply]

Well the results are in and it looks like POP is the winner!!! Maybe I fudged the numbers to come to this conclusion, but so what, pop forever!!!!

LOL, I’ll probably end up letting the boys call it soda as we are in a soda rich area. But I’ll never make the switch myself.

Coming from Virginia, I usually say soda. I have heard both because I have relatives from Ohio. Since waiters push the wine and beer on you so quickly when you’re seated at a restaurant, a lot of times I just ask what “soft drinks” they offer.

I grew up on “pop” up here in Minnesota… And it was not until later in life that I heard “soda” used… (and by “later in life” – I mean around the age of 10 or so)…

I have a sister and a sister in law that lived in D/FW Texas… and quickly learned that there, it is neither pop or soda. It’s called Coke. You are supposed to ask “what kind of Coke do you have” – and the answer is 7up, Mountain Dew, Pepsi… Pepsi Coke?? What the heck is that??

One other thing I do not understand… How any ADULT with ANY common sense would tell a kid “no, we dont have any pop, but we do have soda”…

Come on now… If a kid asked me what kind of “pop”, “soda”, or “coke” I was offering… I could figrue it out!!! (snicker)
