The Thrill Of Saturday Morning Cartoons

How many of you enjoy watching cartoons? I’m not talking the “Family Guy” or “South Park” variety either. I’m talking full fledged kiddie cartoons.  So come on, be honest, we’re all friends here; do you still enjoy them now that you’re in your older years?  Well I sure do & I’m not afraid to admit it either.  As a kid, I was a cartoon fanatic; and now that I have kids, the little fanatic inside of me can safely come out of hiding and rejoice in the fact that cartoons are back in my life on a regular basis.  Only problem is, today’s cartoons suck!

I came to this realization a few weeks ago. Now that Ty is “of school age” (not in school, but don’t get me started), I figured it was time to introduce him to the joys of Saturday Morning Cartoons. I distinctively remember waking up super early every Saturday to indulge in the greatness that was Saturday Morning Cartoons. So as this memory resurfaced, I began to search for shows that Ty would enjoy. Although technology has altered the Saturday Morning Cartoon ritual with the invention of the DVR, I still wanted Ty to have some kind of experiences of his own that somewhat resembled the ones I had from so many years ago.

I couldn’t believe how difficult it was to locate shows during the Saturday morning timeslot. I recall that all of the network stations had kid friendly shows during this time block, but sadly that is no longer the case. I was able to find a few shows airing on network channels, but had to visit “Cartoon Network” for the quality programming. This was disappointing, as in my opinion, “Cartoon Network” programming was always inferior. After watching a few of the shows, my memory was proven correct as the available cartoons here just plain bad. Ty seemed to half way enjoy them, but his excitement was no where near where I would expect.

That was until we got to the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” (airing on ABC by the way). Now these aren’t the same turtles from our day, they’ve been revamped and updated, but the same principles still apply. The show wasn’t as good as I remembered, but Ty loved it! After it was over, he immediately asked when it was coming back on, because he couldn’t wait to watch it again. Cha Ching, the magic of Saturday Morning Cartoons has been unlocked.

To hold him over, I rented the original Ninja Turtles movie and we all watched it as a family. As I said in a previous post, it was probably one of the best movie viewing experiences that we’ve had in a while. The level of excitement in Ty’s eyes was enough to make any parent proud. He was jumping off the couch (something we typically don’t allow), doing flips and ninja kicks during the fight scenes (see below video), and was actually quiet and attentive during the plot building aspects.  I couldn’t have been happier; it was like watching a little me.  The entire family got to pick their favorite Turtle. I was super excited that Ty picked Raphael, because it meant that I got to hold on to Michelangelo; my childhood favorite. Honestly, I was secretly hoping that he didn’t pick Mikey, sad isn’t it. Fefe was Leonardo & Tre got stuck being Donatello. I can always tell when Ty is excited about something because he asks tons of questions; I must have answered a million and one Ninja Turtles questions that night, and loved everyone!

I think that this practice of introducing shows to our children that originated during our childhood is a practice that is handed down from generation to generation.  My Mom introduced me to several of her favorite cartoons from back in her day and some of them still rank high on my list (Flinstones, Scooby, etc). I plan to do the same with my kids, and based on the crappy quality of programming that I’ve observed, they’ll be thanking me for it later.

Fefe & I came up with a few of our favorites. Do any of them ring a bell? Any of your favorites not make the list? Feel free to enlighten us in the comments section.

WOW!!!! u really took me back!!! Boy do I remember Saturday morning cartoons! It was the only time I could get some sleep. U would watch cartoons till almost noon with a bowl of cereal and milk. That was the life! Ninja Turtles….yes Michaelangelo was definitely off limits to everyone. FeFe, Leo was mine but I pass him down to you. lol I still love the Flintstones and do still watch them whenever I can. Although I know every episode, I still love them. U have opened the door to a wonderful experience 4 the boys! Thanks 4 the memories!

Saturday morning Cartoons was part of my rituals as well… Flinstones, Tom & Jerry, Bugs Bunny (Loony Toons), Road Runner, Popeye, Scobby, etc…

I do not know how old you are (I’m in my 40’s) – but most of the cartoons you mentioned I watched with one of my children (spread from 21 years old to 5 years old)… I LOVED watching Dexter’s Lab with my now 14 year old, Rugrats, and Bobby’s world were pretty good too!

And of the recent cartoons (most of which are horrible) I do have to admit to a liking of Spongebob Squarepants…

Then, there are the “grown up” cartoons… Most of the shows I enjoy are cartoons… Simpsons, King of the Hill, Family Guy, and (not quite a cartoon) but Robot Chicken…

Great post!

@Father of Five, Wow, can’t believe I forgot about Popeye, my Dad and I used to watch it religiously on Sunday mornings.

I’m only 26, so most of my favs are from the early 90s, but I do have to admit that Spongebob is a pretty good show. Initially, I wrote it off as annoying, but the more Ty watched, I actually started to enjoy.

Hey, guess what. I saw you Geocaching post earlier in the week and told the wife about it, we’re gonna go try to find one today, I’m looking forward to it & will post back the results to your site.

@Keith, Be sure to find a cache or two that are not “micros”… Medium sized caches with tradeable items in them… And take Ty and Tre with you… Call it a “treasure hunt” – they will have a BLAST!!!

Looking forward to the follow up!

I agree with you on the fact that today’s cartoons suck…but I don’t agree with the fact that you think cartoonetwork programing sucks honestly CN fell off but back in the day best cartoon channel ever…you should start watching anime…I wouldn’t recommend it for the boys now but in a few years they might love it

@Ricky, I just don’t know man, anime doesn’t hit home for some reason. It just seems so over the top to me.

Today’s cartoons suck, that’s why i’m straight anime now..nothing religious but Bleach and Naruto hold it down (subbed not dubbed…hate the american voices)

@The Tenant, you and Ricky should get together and have an anime marathon. I just never been able to really get into it. Maybe one day the kids will enjoy it enough to point out what’s so great, obviously something I’m missing.

I will admit to faithfully watching the Disney channel throughout college and I had the Bugs Bunny cartoons on queue through my Netflix. Something that sucks about being an adult (when watching Disney channel) is actually noticing problems. When watching some “Suite Life of Zack and Cody” episodes it bothers me that the rich girl can do wrong all she wants but “the poor girl” can do good and get outshined. I just don’t like that message.

Cartoons today do pretty much suck. I’m mad that Power Rangers still uses pretty much the same technology as when I watched it. I guess they’re keeping it authentic. Lol.

I can’t get into anime either and I have a degree in animation. I hate when I tell people my degree and their like “Cartoons?” or “Anime?”. No…not exactly.

@Deborah, OMG, the last time I took Ty to a doctors appointment they had “Suite Life of Zack & Cody” on. It was some kind of marathon so I got to see a few episodes. I had never seen the show before but after watching I was thinking the EXACT same thing! That’s kind of sad.
